When you take care of your smile at home daily by brushing and flossing and visiting your dentist every six months, as the American Dental Association (ADA) recommends, you are taking steps to maintain oral health and wellness. This is because these appointments allow our team to monitor oral health over time and catch any potential problems early enough for successful intervention. When periodontal disease or tooth decay is found during hygiene visits, we can move forward with treatment to keep the conditions from becoming much more problematic, causing irreversible damage to the teeth and gums.

What can I expect during my comprehensive dental examination at Leah Zils, DDS?

It’s important to keep track of what is happening with your oral health. That’s why we encourage our patients to have a comprehensive oral examination with Drs. Zils. Each examination begins with a discussion of your dental and medical history, an opportunity for us to get acquainted and for you to voice any new or existing concerns. The examination includes a set of digital x-rays to minimize radiation exposure, a TMJ (temporomandibular joint disorders) assessment, a periodontal exam to evaluate the health of your gums, an oral cancer screening, an evaluation of your bite, and an evaluation of each tooth and existing restorations. This is all accomplished in 2 separate 1 hour visits to prioritize your time and minimize long appointment times at the office.
